SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY
1904 - 2023
Second Baptist Church began in 1904 when a few devout Christian pioneers of this community, headed by the late York Johnson decided to meet together regularly on the Christian Sabbath to worship.
In 1905, the congregants, called Rev. R.L. Clisby to be their pastor and under his leadership the first church was constructed. This building was destroyed by fire, but with determination and faith, the group erected a second structure, named Second Baptist Church.
Besides our Pioneer Fathers, the church was blessed with notable faithful workers who have contributed to the ongoing of this great church.
From its humble beginnings, Second Baptist has made noteworthy progress in the years intervening from 1905. The church was blessed with the following ministers who served as fulltime pastors, and each have contributed to the church's progress.Rev. Browne, Rev. C. M. Emory, Rev. J.W. Luck, Rev. B.R. Lawson, Rev. J. Dudley, Rev. W.T. Young. The son of the church was Rev. Leroy S. Chandler.
In 1941, Rev. Sylvanus S. Browne was called to pastor Second Baptist Church where he served for 32 years. The church was renovated and extended sixty percent larger to accommodate the congregation.
In 1973, Rev. Ezekiel G. Bey assumed the pastorate and through his leadership the congregation doubled in membership with many families and children.
In 1989, Rev. Dr. A. B. Frazier was called to pastor the church. Under his leadership, the church grew in numbers which promoted the need to obtain a bigger edifice. Under his administration, a new church was built and we marched into the new sanctuary on November 25, 2001. Many ministries and community programs were developed under Dr. Frazier's leadership, including a Community Development Center.
This year, 2023. Rev. Dr. Lewis J. Dixon was called to be the 10th Pastor of Second Baptist Church. We believe that God has sent Pastor Dixon to lead the church into the 21st century, meeting the needs of our church and the local community, but not forsaking the purpose of the church to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We are excited about Pastor Dixon's leadership, we believe, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9. We believe our future is bright under the leadership of Pastor Dixon.
God has richly blessed our congregation for 118 years and we pray that we as His church will continue to grow in grace, in service and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
We invite you to come and grow with us as we begin the next page of our journey.
